Portokalopita is a traditional Greek dessert made with crispy phyllo dough, yogurt, and a fragrant orange filling. Soaked in a sweet citrus syrup, it’s a moist and flavorful treat perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • For the Syrup
  • 450 g 16 Sugar

  • 300 g 10.5 Water

  • 400 g 14 Orange Juice

  • 1 tsp 1 Orange Zest

  • Juice of half Lemon

  • 2 2 Cinnamon Sticks

  • For the Orange Pie
  • 450 g 16 oz Phyllo Dough sheets

  • 5 5 Eggs

  • 200 g 7 oz Yogurt

  • 250 g 8.8 oz Margarine

  • Zest of 2 Oranges

  • 20 g 0.7 oz Baking Powder

  • 200 g 7 oz Sugar

  • 1 pinch 1 pinch Salt

Recipe directions

  • For the Syrup
  • In a saucepan, add the orange juice, lemon juice, sugar, 1 teaspoon of orange zest, two cinnamon sticks, and water. Stir briefly.
  • Place the saucepan over medium heat. Bring the mixture to a boil and simmer for 6 minutes. Then set the syrup aside to cool.
  • For the Orange Pie
  • Cut the phyllo dough sheets into large pieces and spread them on a baking tray. Bake at 110°C (230°F) until they develop a nice golden color.
  • In a bowl, combine the sugar, eggs, and a pinch of salt. Mix well.
  • Add the zest from two oranges, yogurt, and mix again.
  • Add the margarine (at room temperature) and stir until combined.
  • Incorporate the baking powder and mix thoroughly.
  • Carefully fold the baked phyllo pieces into the mixture, being gentle to keep them as intact as possible.
  • Transfer the mixture to a 25×35 cm baking dish. Spread it evenly.
  • Preheat the oven to 160°C (320°F) on a fan setting and bake for 40-45 minutes.
  • To Assemble
  • Once baked, remove the dish from the oven and pour the syrup evenly over the orange pie.
