How to make Skillet Apple Pie

  • Peel the apples, slice them into thick wedges, and place them in a bowl of water with a little lemon juice to prevent browning.
  • In a large skillet over low heat, melt the butter with the sugar.
  • Once melted, add the apples and cook, stirring occasionally, until they release their juices and soften.
  • Sprinkle with cinnamon, reduce the heat to very low, and set aside.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk the eggs with the sugar and vanilla until creamy.
  • Add the melted butter, milk, and finally the flour. Mix until smooth.
  • Pour the batter evenly over the apples in the skillet.
  • Cover with a lid (do not lift during cooking) and cook over very low heat for 15โ€“20 minutes, until the cake rises and sets. If the lid has a hole, cover it with foil to trap the steam.
  • Once cooked, let the cake rest for 5โ€“10 minutes.
  • Carefully invert onto a serving platter. Dust with powdered sugar and cinnamon before serving.

Tips for Success

  • Low Heat is Key: Cooking slowly ensures the cake cooks through without burning.
  • Use Firm Apples: Varieties like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Gala hold their shape well.
  • Serve Warm: The cake is best enjoyed fresh, with a dusting of powdered sugar or even a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

  • Add a handful of raisins or chopped walnuts to the apples for extra texture.
  • For a lighter version, reduce the sugar slightly โ€” the apples provide natural sweetness.
