Ingredients

  • 800 g 5 cup White Sesame Seeds

  • 40-70 g 3-5 Sunflower Oil

How to make Tahini

  • Line a baking tray with parchment paper and spread the sesame seeds evenly.
  • Toast in a preheated oven at 320ยฐF (160ยฐC) conventional heat or 300ยฐF (150ยฐC) fan-assisted for 15 minutes, stirring every 3 minutes so the sesame seeds toast evenly.
  • Allow the sesame seeds to cool for about 5 minutes.
  • Add half of the sesame seeds to a food processor or a container suitable for an immersion blender. If your processor is small, work in batches.
  • Blend until the seeds begin breaking down.
  • Add half of the sunflower oil and blend again for about 1 minute.
  • Add the remaining sesame seeds and the rest of the oil. Blend until combined.
  • Let the mixture rest for 10 minutes.
  • Blend once more for 1 additional minute until smooth and creamy.
  • Transfer the tahini into a sterilized jar and store in a cool, dark place.

Why Homemade Tahini Tastes Better

Freshly toasted sesame seeds release natural oils that create a deeper nutty aroma compared to commercial tahini. Because no stabilizers are added, the flavor remains pure and intense.

The Secret to Smooth Tahini

Three factors determine texture:

  • Properly toasted (not burnt) sesame seeds
  • Gradual oil addition
  • Multiple blending stages with short resting time

Resting allows natural oils to release, helping achieve a creamy consistency.

Health Benefits of Tahini

Tahini is naturally rich in:

  • Healthy fats
  • Plant-based protein
  • Calcium
  • Antioxidants

Itโ€™s a staple ingredient in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern diets.
