Ingredients

  • Filling
  • 70 g 1/3 cup Olive Oil

  • 750 g 1.6 lb Minced Beef and Pork (or just one type)

  • 3-4 3-4 Large Onions, chopped

  • 3 3 Garlic Cloves, chopped

  • 1/2 bunch 1/2 bunch Fresh Parsley, finely chopped

  • Salt and Pepper

  • Other Ingredients
  • 1 package 1 package Phyllo Dough (450 g)

  • 300-400 g 10-14 Melting Cheese, grated

  • 250 g 1 cup Butter

  • Sesame Seeds, for sprinkling

  • Water, for spraying

How to make the Greek Meat Pie

  • Heat the olive oil in a pan.
  • Sauté onions and garlic for 4 minutes until soft.
  • Add the ground meat and sauté for 5 minutes.
  • Stir in parsley, salt, and pepper, and cook until the liquids evaporate.
  • Let the filling cool completely.
  • Cut the phyllo sheets in half.
  • Butter a baking dish (26×37 cm / 10×14 in).
  • Layer 4 sheets on the bottom, brushing each with butter, then add another 3–4 in the middle.
  • Add and spread half of the grated cheese.
  • Spread the meat filling evenly.
  • Spread the rest of grated cheese.
  • Cover with 4 more phyllo sheets and again 3–4 in the middle, always brushing with butter.
  • Crumple the remaining phyllo sheets into strips and arrange them on top.
  • Brush with butter and refrigerate the pie for 20 minutes.
  • Cut into portions, brush with more butter, spray lightly with water, and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  • Bake at 160°C (320°F), on the lower rack with top and bottom heat, for 60–70 minutes until golden brown.
