Bougiourdi: Greek Baked Feta with Tomatoes & Peppers

Μπουγιουρντί στον φούρνο - Greek Baked Feta

Bougiourdi is one of the most beloved Greek taverna appetizers — a simple yet incredibly flavorful dish made with baked feta, fresh tomatoes, colorful peppers, olive oil, and melted cheese. It’s rustic, bold, and ready in under 30 minutes.

As it bakes, the feta softens, the tomatoes release their juices, and the peppers become tender, creating a rich Mediterranean sauce perfect for dipping crusty bread. If you’re looking for a quick, authentic Greek appetizer with minimal prep, this oven-baked bougiourdi is the answer.

What Is Bougiourdi?

Bougiourdi is a classic Greek baked feta appetizer, commonly served in tavernas across Greece. The name refers to the folded parchment package used during baking, which traps steam and intensifies flavor.

Why Baking in a Sealed Pouch Matters

Sealing the feta and vegetables inside parchment and foil creates a mini steam environment. This technique:

  • Softens the feta without drying it
  • Keeps the tomatoes juicy
  • Enhances the aroma of olive oil and herbs

Flavor Balance

The combination of salty feta, sweet roasted peppers, and fresh tomato creates a perfectly balanced Mediterranean profile. The addition of melting cheese adds richness and a lightly golden top.

Bougiourdi is best served hot with:

  • Crusty bread
  • Pita bread
  • As part of a Greek meze platter

It also pairs beautifully with grilled meats or seafood.
